I was working in my office when one of our crew members called me to the apparatus floor. On my arrival I found a young lady with her dog. She showed me a large engorged tick on the dogs neck. From the size of the tick it appears he had been sucking blood for sometime.
So how do you remove a tick from a dog or a human. There are many different ideas out there, such as burning them off with a cigarette lighter. Most of these methods don’t work well and can cause additional injuries.
Removing Ticks
The method I came up with for this dog has proved successful many time since its first use. First, obtain a bottle of alcohol or the foaming hand sanitizer made with alcohol. Soak the tick with liberal amounts of the alcohol. Keep the tick saturated for about five minutes. After five minutes has lapsed

the tick may fall off on it’s own. If not you should remove it with a credit card. Gently scrape the skin to detach the tick. Next, make sure you check the affected area to assure that part of the tick is not still attached. Once you have removed all of the tick wash the area with alcohol. This will help prevent infection.
Keep a Record
It is a good idea to mark your calendar as to the date the tick was removed. If you start having flu like symptoms or develop a rash, you should contact your physician. Having saved the date when the tick was removed provides the physician with important information. Most adverse symptoms will occur within two weeks. It is good practice to be evaluated by a physician anytime you have been bitten by a tick.
Ticks Can Carry Diseases
Ticks can carry several diseases such as:
Lyme Disease
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Colorado Tick Fever
Tularemia
Ehrlichiosis
Prevention
Ticks are common in high grass. They can be in yard grass and leaves of trees. If you have animals, be sure to check them when they come in from outdoors. If your children are playing in grass or climbing trees, consider checking them before going to bed. Ticks tend to migrate to warm moist areas of the body.
Most of the time ticks will not pose a problem. Follow theses simple tips to provide extra protection if you are or others are found to be bitten by a tick.
